International Dark Sky Reserves and Parks
Of the 30 designated International Dark Sky Reserves and Parks in the world 6 are in the British Isles. Our nearest is the Brecon Beacons National Park. However there are four locations on the Long Mynd which are now designated Dark Sky Discovery Sites in the highest category Milky Way Class.
With no Towns or large Villages to create light pollution and close to the highest point on the Long Mynd, Shooting Box is ideal for views towards the sunset and the west. There are a few outlying houses in the far distance whose lights have little impact.
Pole Cottage car park is adjacent to a fenced area that can be used for camping by arrangement with the National Trust. Close to the highest point, Pole Bank, which is a short walk away to the North along a provides excellent views towards the east and west from the Pole Cottage Car Park.
After leaving Church Stretton and climbing the steep Burway road alongside the Burway Hill, you reach the car park on the left after the brow of the hill. This car park is the largest of our sites and is the most suitable for wheelchairs.
Carding Mill Valley
The lower car park and coach park are excellent for events where you may need to use indoor facilities which can be made available by prior arrangement. The surrounding hills screen lights from the town but do allow views of the stars rising in the east between Helmeth and Hazler Hills. If you want an even darker experience, the top car park in Carding Mill Valley is only a short walk away.
